Artist Statement: Perspective
Photography has been my way of documenting the connection between the natural world and everyday experience for over 30 years. This connection deepened during a 2012 backpacking trip in Yosemite. Captivated by a sky filled with puffy clouds, I spontaneously looked backward through my legs, viewing the world upside down.
The images in "Perspective" emerge from this unconventional vantage point. By capturing images upside down, I alter my interaction with reality. I invite viewers to engage with these images fluidly and intuitively, allowing their eyes to wander naturally—free from preconceived notions of orientation and direction.
This series reflects two fundamental themes. First, it explores the self-centered nature of human perspective; we often navigate the world anchored to our own views, rarely considering others' perspectives.
Second, the series contemplates our place in the universe. Living on a planet in space, concepts like “up” and “down” are mere constructs. Just as we look up to see Mars or the moon, observers there would look up to see Earth.
"Perspective" is an invitation to see the world anew—to embrace the unfamiliar and to recognize the beauty that can emerge when we shift our point of view.
